The (Expanded) Core
Values of King's Grant Baptist Church.
Our Statement of Faith
and Principles
The
King's Grant Baptist Church is a united, harmonious fellowship of compassionate, servant-oriented and mission-minded believers who strive to follow the teachings and example of Jesus Christ.
The Church is a prayerful body of believers working to be more evangelistic and open to change and transition in answering
God's call to service. Each year a large number of the congregations are involved in local, state-wide and international missions.
The congregation supports its Church leadership and Church ministry initiatives. In connection with governance and administration, the congregation nominates and elects its committees, then respects and supports their efforts, resolving issues in a spirit of Christian harmony.
The Church welcomes men and women in leadership roles including Deacon and Staff positions.
The Church is ecumenical, cooperating with other churches to serve the community.
The Church supports the traditional Baptist principles of:
- religious liberty
- autonomy of the local church
- the priesthood of the believer
- soul competency
Believing the Bible to be the sole authority for faith and practice, the Church rejects any attempts by external organizations to establish and enforce creedal statements for local churches or for missionaries.
The Church endorses the Baptist Faith and Message of 1963 as a non-creedal confession of faith in our religious and denominational life.
The Church voluntarily supports and enters into partnership associations with the Norfolk Baptist Association (NBA) locally, the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia (CBFV) at the state level, and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) and Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) at the national level. The Church gives cooperatively to the CBF, SBC and others providing each of its members the option of designating contributions and directing mission dollars solely to the Church or to the BGAV and SBC or BGAV and CBF or otherwise.
An understanding of the gospel of
grace as the dynamic for all life-change and ministry.
"Religion," the default mode of the
human heart, is "I obey - therefore I am accepted." But the
gospel of grace is "I am accepted through Christ - therefore I
obey." Nearly everyone thinks Christianity is another form
of "religion." But when the gospel is communicated clearly,
it not only amazes and attracts those who don't believe, it
helps Christians grow in grace who are mired in the
self-righteousness, pride and anxiety that moralism
produces.
A heavy emphasis on small groups
and the necessity of deep community.
God's purpose in history is not simply
to save individual souls, but to create a new humanity, a
people with a communal life that reflects, to some degree,
the future kingdom of God. We are to see people united in
love who could never have been brought together without the
power of the gospel to humble, affirm and transform their
identity. Christians are, therefore, not to simply come to
church to receive inspiration and information, but are to
give themselves to real community and personal
relationships.
A welcoming heart toward people who
don't believe in Christ.
The gospel removes any sense of superiority toward those who
don't share our beliefs. We respect and remember what it is
like to seriously doubt Christianity. We therefore expect
not-yet-believers in almost every facet of KGBC's ministry
and we make every effort to engage and address their
questions and concerns.
A holistic emphasis on ministry in both word and deed
with a concern for missions.
Jesus didn't save us just with words, but mainly through his
deeds... his work. The gospel demands that every recipient of
God's grace surrender the illusion of self-sufficiency.
This removes all superiority toward the poor. It equips us
to use our gifts and resources to love our neighbors not
just in word, but through deeds of sacrificial love.
A goal of equipping people for cultural renewal
through the integration of faith and work.
The gospel brings us a unique perspective on God, human
nature, the material world, the direction of history, and
the importance of community. All of these inevitably
influence the way we work, whether in business, government,
healthcare, service industries or school. Therefore,
we help Christians integrate their faith with their work in
order to serve the common good of the whole community.
A radical commitment to evangelism and discipleship.
The vigorous, continual spreading of the gospel is the single most crucial strategy for the numerical growth
of the Body of Christ, the renewal of existing churches, and
the overall impact of the church on the culture of our area
and the world. We seek to exalt the Savior, equip the
saints and evangelize our society.
